The start of college basketball season, with the transfer portal in place, has become a confusing time. Take the NBA—now famous for doing all its player movement over the first 72 hours or so of free agency, followed by months of relative silence save whatever has happened recently in Brooklyn—only multiple the number of teams by 10 and stretch out the movement period from late March until early August. Even an engaged consumer of the product might have trouble navigating who is who, where they were last year and where they might be now.

The merry-go-round of Division I men’s hoops now is subject to everyone’s whims at this point—coaches, players, handlers, deep-pocketed NIL collectives, parents—and a lot of times way far down on that list is, “Does this situation actually suit the player in question?”
Answering that question isn’t foolproof—someone on this list is going to find the grass was not in fact greener here and be relegated to irregular minutes and possibly another trip to the portal after this season. Maybe even in the middle of it. Maybe before this posts. The world, ‘tis funny.
